Transmit the message to the receiver

If you were born anywhere before 1990, you’ll probably be aware of what a mix tape is. If you were born any later than that, you’re likely to be more familiar with the concept of a playlist. That’s all this is: one giant long greatest hits album/cd/mix tape/playlist.

Only it’s not another rehash of some artists singles form the 14 studio albums they’ve released, with the bonus of 8 previously unreleased tracks whose quality is that poor that they should have stayed unreleased. Oh no – it’s not that.

These are tracks, accompanied where possible by the official videos or television performances, of the songs that are significant in my lifetime, which began in the distant past that is December 1971, The significance that I refer to, can be cultural, political, musical, historical or simply personal. I do not apologise at all for the quality of the some of the performances that are showcased – that is probably the point I’m trying to make.

I have attempted to put the songs in chronological order – an order that is the combination of the date they were released, or the date of their significance. Sometimes these dates vary wildly. I hope the entries are self explanatory, and some of the music at least is to your liking.
